Late Harvest Wines: Patience is a Virtue

Harvest is an exciting time of the year for Messina Hof and Texas wineries; grapes are finally picked off the vines to begin the winemaking process. The type of grape, year, and conditions are factors that contribute to wine, however timing is everything. At Messina Hof Winery & Resort, we begin our harvest season in July, but grapes can be harvested as late as November in certain regions. Picking grapes later in the season is a technique winemakers use to produce late harvest wines. A late harvest wine is when grapes are left on the vine for a longer period of time, causing them to dehydrate, increasing the natural sugar content in the grapes. Due to the considerable amount of sugar the grapes develop late harvest wines tend to be sweeter and are typically used as dessert wines. Messina Hof is gearing up for the 2014 Harvest season. Bring your family out this summer, and experience this one-of-a-kind experience for yourself.

Grape Stomping

The History of Grape Stomping

After you enjoy a little grape stomping (complete with your very own souvenir t-shirt, “signed” with your purple feet). Lets take a brief look at the history of mushing them grapes! [ss_separator size="full" icon="icon-glass" ] First off what is Grape-stomping? Well Grape-stomping (also known as pigeage) is part of method of maceration used in traditional winemaking. Rather than using a wine press or other mechanized method, grapes were crushed by foot in vats to release their juices and begin fermentation.

One of the earliest extant visual representations of the practice appears on a Roman Empire sarcophagus from the 3rd century CE, which depicts an idealized pastoral scene with a group of Erotesharvesting and stomping grapes at Vindemia, a rural Roman vintage festival.

Many contemporary wineries hold grape stomping contests to attract visitors. The practice is also the subject of many depictions in contemporary media, including the 1974 Mel Tillis song "Stomp Them Grapes," the I Love Lucy episode "Lucy's Italian Movie," and a children's book by Alan Madison.
