2010 Wine Appreciation Class Schedule
February: “Wines and Chocolates”
Those who love fine chocolate and fine wine find key points of similarity. Both are made from fruit (the cocoa nibs from which chocolate is made are the seeds of the fruit of the cocoa tree, and fruit was eaten by early Americans long before they discovered how to make chocolate beverage from the seeds). The flavor and aroma yielded by both cacao pod and grape are a function of not only their rootstock, but of their soil, climate, and the weather conditions affecting any single harvest. Both are made from a blend of beans or grapes, each with distinct flavor profiles; and when the product is made from a blend, it adds to the complexity of tastes. Learn to pair Messina Hof Wines and Ports with your favorite chocolate.
March: “The Wines of Burgundy”
A funny thing happened to the name of this region (and its sub region Chablis) in the United States. It was used to mean generic jug wines, and many people still associate the name with low quality wines. Burgundy consists of five distinct regions and two noble grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
April: “Texas Wines and Texas Cheese”
Wine and Cheese are often considered to go “hand in hand.” Learn to pair wines and cheeses and taste our award winning wines with Texas Artisan Cheeses.
May: "Effects of Oak Aging on Wine"
Learn how a practical container for storing wines became an art of oak aging. You’ll learn about Messina Hof’s unique Barrel Reserve and Private Reserve oak aging methods. You’ll try several wines and identify the different flavors that the oak imparts.
June: “Great Wines for Summer”
Quench your thirst with perfect summer wines! Learn which Messina Hof Wines are perfect for the Backyard Barbecue and Spicy Foods!
